Saumur is best known for its sparkling wines and Cavalry School.

The chateau above the town appears as in a fairy tale.

The town's history starts in the 10th century. The remains of the city wall, well hidden in some backyards, are witnesses of the 100 years war.

Saumur became a centre of Protestant  scholarship in the 16th and 17thcentury. This rich legacy can be seen during a stroll through the old quarter.

Great buildings show the glory of the 19th century.

The Abbey of Fontevraud remains the largest group of monastic buildings in France. It was founded in 1101 for both women and men and run by aristocratic abbesses, almost half of them of royal lineage. They impressed their mark on its history and architecture.

The abbey is also the resting place of the Plantagenêts: at least 8 family members were buried here, four recumbent figures remain.

After the French Revolution it was transformed into a state prison. Since 1975 the abbey has been a Cultural Centre proposing exhibitions and events.

The Chateau of Langeais is at the threshold between medieval and Renaissance architecture. Its rooms are richly furnished. From the parapet walk you have a stunning panorama. Also the park offers you nice view points and just behind the oldest keep of France (from around the year 1000) you’ll discover a surprising (modern) tree house.

The Chateau of Azay-le-Rideau, built on the foundations of a medieval fortress, is a masterpiece of 16th-century architecture.  Its romantic park invites you to wander around and enjoy the water mirrors.

Third wine region in France!
